According to the latest report by The Wine and Spirit Trade Association, (WSTA) gin sales have reached a record £2 billion. According to the report, UK sales for the 12 months to June 2018 were £1.6 billion, up 38% on the previous year. Exports were worth of £532 million.
Gin sales growth is outpacing sales of all other spirits, the so called ginaissance. If growth continues at the present rate, gin sales could reach £3 billion by the end of 2020.
As over £8 of every one of the 60 million or so bottles sold in the UK goes to the treasury, the government seems to be doing alright out of the boom. The WSTA raise a concern though, the expected rise in duty forecast for the Autumn Budget could dampen sales.
There are more than 100 brands on the market, over double of that five years ago.
