Some fascinating vino facts to impress your friends at the bar and round the dining table.

- Around 800 gallons, that's almost 5,000 standard bottles, of wine can be produced from one acre of grapevines.
- There are over 10,000 varieties of wine grapes around the world.
- A glass of wine will contain about 85 calories.
- It takes just over one kilogram of grapes to make a bottle of wine.
- Chablis is made from the Chardonnay grape, be sure to remind all those that say they don't like Chardonnay and would prefer Chablis.
- In ancient Babylon, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (that's fermented honey 'wine' beverage) he could drink for a month after the wedding. Because this calendar was lunar or moon-based, the period of free mead was called the "honey month" or what we now call the "honeymoon".
- Pubs served drinks in pints and quarts. Innkeepers would advise unruly customers to mind their own pints and quarts. It's the origin of minding your 'P's and Q's'.
- Methyphobia is the fear of alcohol.
- In olden days, a whistle was baked into the rim or handle of ceramic cups and mugs used by pub drinkers. When they wanted a refill, they used to whistle to get the barman's attention. So when out drinking, they used to 'wet their whistle'.
- White wine gets darker as it ages, while red wine get lighter.
