Japanese Whisky

Japanese WhiskyWe're well aware this is the Vino Club and we like all things wine but we came across this and thought you might find the news interesting. Japanese whisky is seen as equal to, or in some cases better than Scottish whisky. At the 2010 World Whisky Awards, whiskies from Japan won prizes in two of the top three categories for Scottish-style whisky. Until quite recently Japan had been keeping their top-quality whisky to themselves. There is now quite a wide selection available across Europe, particularly France.

So what's so special about Japanese whisky?

Japanese producers adhere rigorously to traditional distilling methods; some even continue to use time-tested techniques that the Scots themselves have abandoned. One unique distinction of Japanese whisky is the idea behind its origin and its relationship with the Japanese drinking culture. The Japanese tend to eat while theyre drinking; as a result their whisky is often specially designed to accompany food. At the awards ceremony, Japanese whisky was commended for its balance, smoothness and delicate nature.

Whats recommended?

One award winning whisky that everyones talking about is called Ichiros Malt. It is made by a tiny distillery an hour outside of Tokyo and is starting to be stocked across Europe. So, maybe next time you're trying to decide upon a wine to accompany dinner you might be tempted to put those taste buds to the test and put that nice bottle of red back and try a Japanese whisky instead.
