What is organic wine?

Organic Wine Sign

Organic wine is made from organic grapes using an organic wine making process and therefore the wine should not contain any preservatives, the biggest one being sulphites. Organic grapes are cultivated without the use of pesticides, herbicides or insecticides. Grapes are regarded as one of the most heavily sprayed crops with some conventional wine grape cultivation using up to 17 chemical substances. As a result the grapes contain pesticides that can harm the plants, the soil, consequently the environment and these may also present in the wine as a residue.

How does organic farming work?

Organic farming thrives on ‘biodiversity’ by allowing other plants to grow in and around the vineyard. Weeds are allowed to grow, therefore herbicides are not used, instead the soil is cultivated by planting over crops. The soil will be enriched naturally using composted animal manure and the inclusion of beneficial insects to keep the less helpful ones away. The grapes will then be hand - picked therefore only the healthiest will be used.

Organic farming standards are assessed once or twice a year by an independent body of certification to ensure adequate levels are met.

Is the wine making process organic too?

Organic wineries will make sure the wine making process is organic by keeping the physical treatment to a minimum and no extra sulphites will be added.

Are pesticides and preservatives harmful to humans?

The most common complaint caused by sulphites added to wine is headaches. Sulphites can be found in both red and white wines, they are believed to cause or enhance asthma like symptoms particularly in those who already suffer with severe asthma.

What are the disadvantages?

Wines without sulphites tend to have a shorter shelf life, however they are gradually being improved as new wine making techniques are developed and the screw cap becomes more widely used.

What are the advantages?

By choosing organic wine you will be avoiding the possible harmful effects from sulphites, doing your bit for the environment and not to mention enjoying a great taste.
